According to an ancient myth of the Orkney Islands, shapeshifters Selkies inhabit the bodies of seals and shed their skin when they emerge from the water to mingle with humans. In these stories, the Selkies' skin is often found and hidden by local men, forcing them to marry their human captor. In our interpretation of this story, however, the Selkie gains the upper hand
